Fic: as the sun reaches out
Aug. 3rd, 2023 01:02 amas the sun reaches out is essentially a retelling of the parts of Buries A Hatchet which I think would be enhanced by the presense of daemons, and assumes that everything else in the book happened broadly as described in canon.
In it we hear a daemon stampede, witness an excruciating conversation at cross purposes, and find out just how stereotypically American I can make Pat Manton (I did my best, alright?)
Bertie greeted the returning party with a cheery grin and a round of tea. “What’s the plan, chaps?”
“Burn the damn place to the ground,” said Kaspar. He jumped down from Fritz’s shoulder and stretched, agitated, before joining the other daemons in their berth. “I would set the charges if I could.”
Fritz was white-faced still, his mouth a hard line. Biggles had let him be on the long walk back to the Otter. There was little he could say to reassure the boy; it was kinder to be honest than to give false hope.
“What’s happened?” Algy asked.
Biggles accepted his mug of tea and took a long sip before replying. “It seems that the prison keeps their inmates in line through more than simple intimidation,” he said, as evenly as he could manage. “We saw that the chain gang had no daemons with them.”
“And when I asked Miskoff, he told me that – that –” Fritz clenched his fists and sat heavily on one of the cabin seats, burying his head in his hands. He looked his age for once, shoulders slumped.
Biggles set a hand briefly on his shoulder. “The daemons are kept separately in the prison,” he continued for him. “In a room full of cages. Larger ones are restrained, and the birds have their wings clipped. They are only released when the prisoners are.”
