So some of you may recall about two months ago when I posted that time loop ficlet during the Time Loop Boom. Well, as of this evening I have started expanding it just slightly...

Hello! I really was going to do this yesterday evening and then I got home to a minor laundry emergency which I am still working through even now at half one the following day. None of this is intended as humblebragging, I just like looking at numbers (see also: the spreadsheet).

2023 was probably my most productive writing year Ever. According to Ao3 I posted 113,394 words, and I have no doubt that my various WIPs add another 10-20k to that total. It's genuinely insane to me how much I wrote and how consistently I was able to sit down and Get Some Writing Done, which has often been the barrier to getting things finished in the past. Possibly Biggles is just an unprecented motivator!

Fandom stats:
  • I posted 33 works in total in 2023, three of those being podfic.
  • Biggles-wise, I posted 62,123 words across 19 works (plus 2 podfics). Some of those words are actually for Gimlet and Worrals because of the Whumptober fic, but I still find it a staggering number considering my total across all fandoms in 2022 was 59,943. My longest was as the sun reaches out (second part of the Daemon AU!) at 12,859 words and the shortest was wish you were here (the postcard fic <3) at 0 words.
  • My next largest fandom was The Terror, for which I wrote 42,584 words across 4 works. Again, a truly insane number to me. The longest was (unsurprisingly) by excess or defect, my Terror Big Bang fic, which was an insane 23,512 words. I'm hoping to write some more Terror fic this year but that might require a rewatch and I'm too fragile for that right now.
  • Other fandoms: Worrals, Gimlet, Rivers of London, Lord Peter Wimsey, Legends & Lattes, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Original Work. Of these, RoL and LPW are the forever fandoms which I will crossover with anything that moves.
For 2024, I'd like to finish one of my longer Biggles WIPs (either the Yugoslavia fic or the mind control recovery fic being the most likely candidates), and I'll probably sign up for Candy Hearts as a low pressure exchange since my new job (!!) starts at the end of January. I would also like to write something for any other fandom, because I do miss writing for things like Trek and Doctor Who - I feel a bit like I've been having an extended affair with the Johnsiverse.

Progress on non-fannish projects has sadly not been quite so plentiful. My beloved romance novel project (WW1 ambulance driver/nurse) sat stagnant most of the year, although I did reread it occasionally and I do still think it has good bones. If I ever get over the hump that is introducing the core conflict I'll have a champagne party or something. I also put down quite a lot of ideas for short stories and even spent a good while planning some children's xenofiction (talking animals) but again, progress has been slow. I'd like to finish another few short stories in 2024, and get the one I did finish the year before polished up and possibly submit it places, but just finishing things would be plenty for me.

I frequently end up realising several hundred words into a fic that I am writing the part of the fic that is less interesting than what I want to be writing. If it were a novel I was writing I'd probably plough on through but on this occasion I'm throwing the first ~500 words out and putting them here for the enjoyment of the reading public.

The basic premise is some post-Hatchet Fritz&EvS fic, but I started it too early to actually have them interact much in the first part of the fic which isn't what I was gunning for. So here it is!

Now I can delete this and get on with Fritz finally giving his uncle a hug.

Had a tricky day at work today so I am very pleased to now be sat in my armchair looking through Fic In A Box prompts. However it DID remind me that I've been slacking on my other WIPs, so have a snippet of the Frau Lowenhardt fic in heartfelt apology.

“I heard my siren call,” he said to Biggles, in English. “What sort of foolish business has dear Erich got himself wrapped up in now?”

Biggles shook his head. Frau Lowenhardt had extracted a handkerchief from her handbag and was using it to dab at her eyes. “He’s not made the trouble this time,” he said quietly. “This is his sister.”

“I’m shocked he’s got any family that’ll speak to him,” said Algy mulishly. Biggles frowned. Algy raised an eyebrow. “Oh, come on, Biggles. I know you and he have your… understanding. But you must admit he’s not the conventional image of a family man.”

Biggles had to admit nothing. He had never thought of von Stalhein as such, no, but then when he did think of von Stalhein it was usually in the context of his work, and when or if they might meet again in some far flung region. It went against that to think of him returning home to anyone in particular, whether a wife - singularly difficult to imagine - or in this case to a loving sister and adoring nephew.

Frau Lowenhardt folded her handkerchief away and sat, primly, with both hands on the close of her handbag. It seemed to Biggles that she was awaiting the decision in the same way he had more than once waited for the sharp report of a firing squad.

It's growing very slowly now that it's term time but at least I can relax into it from time to time.

Another day of the week another new alliterative post title! All weekend I have been thinking about writing and only now, on Monday evening, am I finally sitting down to actually get something written!

Today I bring you a little more of the Frau Lowenhardt show, in which she is explaining the inciting incident to Biggles and holding back one vital piece of information.

Intrigue!  )

The fact this fic is probably going to end up being like ten thousand words haunts me.

I like naming days apparently. ANYWAY having finished the Hatchet fic and resigned myself to the fact that the time loop fic requires a complete ground-up rewrite, I have started a new project.

The desk phone rang with its usual shrill tone. James Bigglesworth of the Air Police answered the phone perhaps two dozen times each day, and so had no reason to suspect that as a result of this particular call he would soon find himself in a mess of trouble.

“Bigglesworth speaking,” he said, as the receiver hissed quietly.

“There’s a woman here asking for you,” said the receptionist, sounding harried. “She’s being quite insistent about it.”

Biggles could just make out the sound of raised voices. “I’ll be down presently,” he said, and waited as little time as propriety allowed before hanging the phone back on its hook.

Algy glanced up at him from his own desk, where he had been busily folding a piece of newspaper into a paper football. “What’s toward?”

“Someone asking for me,” said Biggles. “Perhaps somebody has finally caught on to my web of crime.”

“That’ll be the day,” replied Algy. “If you’re not back in ten minutes I’ll have your desk, shall I?”

“Not if I get it first,” called Ginger, who had just returned from the kitchen with a cup of tea and plate of biscuits. Algy, disregarding the biscuits, threw the paper football at Ginger’s head.

While they were resolving their differences, Biggles ducked past them both and headed downstairs to the reception area.

It's set at some point after Follows On and involves more than one Lowenhardt! Because apparently I cannot stop starting long writing projects (I am supposed to be finishing my The Terror Big Bang fic).

I missed WIP Wednesday (and always do) because honestly what is a "Wednesday" anyway, sounds very suspicious to me, so here is a small piece of the Buries A Hatchet Daemon AU which I continue to slave away at in the vain hope it'll magically finish itself, or possibly some helpful mice will start typing away overnight a la The Tailor of Gloucester.

In this portion we begin to unravel exactly what it was that changed Intelligence's mind on a rescue mission, and no one is happy about it.

I have four Biggleses on the boil at present. This is an excerpt from one which started life as a Prisoner Exchange treat and then was not even remotely close to finished in time. Such is life! Anyway, it's a canon divergence thing in which Algy and EvS are imprisoned together after WW1 and before the events of & Co., so Algy gets the shock of EvS being alive and EvS is very much in the amiable mode of & Co.

Algy is very longsuffering )

I just think they're neat. <3
