Home Again, Home Again...
Aug. 1st, 2024 07:03 pmMy dad would finish that post title with 'jiggety jog' and I have never understood why. But in the nature of 'things my dad says', I am cursed to repeat it every time I come home from a trip.
In this case, I've been in Naples! On acquiring my current (and now permanent) job I suggested to my partner that we do a Proper Holiday this summer. The last holiday we managed was three days in Edinburgh, which was lovely but also necessarily on a tight budget as two supply teachers with no summer income beyond Universal Credit. So after a lot of deliberation, we landed on Italy as our destination. We want to save Rome for when we've saved up more, and Florence was far too expensive to fly to, so Naples seemed the perfect choice - and when I remembered Pompei was nearby, it was settled.
I had a lovely four-ish day holiday (flew in Saturday evening, flew out on Thursday morning) and managed to cram in an unbelievable amount of activities and food, and still feel like we could easily spend another week there and still not run out of things to do. We managed to do the Spaccanapoli and the rest of the centro storico, Pompei (about a third of it, it was HOT), the Archaeological Museum, the botanical gardens, a very naff torture museum (to get out of the heat), a little bit of the port area, and a day trip to Ischia which was beautiful and also left us both sunburnt around the shoulders. Food wise we absolutely demolished a huge quantity of pizza, pasta, granita and gelato and frankly I don't know how we're supposed to eat food anymore. It's been ruined. By the best pizza I've ever eaten being five euro and taking three minutes to arrive.
The upshot of being home is that 1) I don't have to wear a massive floppy sunhat everywhere and 2) I can finally comment on things and also get some more writing done. So, poll!

Date: 2024-08-01 06:53 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, I can tell you why your dad says that, or at least one possible reason - it's a nursery rhyme, and it was in a book of them that we had when I was a kid, although "jiggity jig" is how I heard it:
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.
(I originally thought it was lines from Three Little Pigs and had to do some googling to realize that it was its own thing.)

Home again, home again, jiggity (or joggity)-jog.
I used to say it with my children as a bouncing-on-parent's-knee riding song.

Date: 2024-08-01 09:51 pm (UTC)(And yeah, my mum always says 'home again home again jiggety-jig' for the same nursery rhyme reasons and so do I, it is clearly a generational curse of some sort, given that I also used to hear my grandmother say it...)
