Struggled mightily today so here is a drabble about the saddest little man in the Jamesian canon, amateur archaeologist Paxton from A Warning to the Curious.
The darkness of the earth inside the barrow swallowed Paxton whole. It was a tight fit, returning to the place where he had first uncovered the crown, and he was conscious all the time of the oppressive weight not of the earth itself but of the shadow that had followed him since he first touched the tarnished silver.
He laid it once again to rest with a sort of detached calm. He knew it would likely be for nothing; Ager had taken against him for his transgression, and the hatred of a dead man would not so easily be dispelled.
