Fic Gods Mocking Me

Can someone explain why it took me an agonising fortnight to write my Airdrop fic and then the moment I decided to do a treat I banged out a thousand words in under an hour? Infuriating.

I didn't end up signing up for Candy Hearts but I may check in to write some treats closer to reveals! Really my writing schedule at the moment is 'whenever I glance to the left of my browser and remember I had a document open' so hopefully I'll be able to... do something else... to make it more regimented. I like writing every day! I just forget to do it.

Less pressure when it comes to treats? :) That's my guess.

I wrote the better part of an Airdrop treat before sign-ups even finished, in no time at all. And yes, it took me ages to do my actual assignment too, for... reasons.

The exchange gods are cruel and fickle like that. I remember one time some years back I had a request in an exchange that was literally 'write more like all the other fic you've written for this ship' and it was an absolute battle royal to write anything at all.

I'm not signed up for Candy Hearts either, I need a breather from deadlines and I live in hope that I might at some point manage to finish some of my longer WIPs /o\

Oh that does sound tough though. Sometimes it's easier to go completely off piste with something, when you've been used to writing in a different way.

I join you in the Finishing WIPs struggle. They call out to me so plaintively every time I open a new Google Doc...

I feel your pain. I once spent weeks trying to settle on an exchange assignment, then banged out a 12k treat in 3 days /o\

I'm also taking an exchange break, not least because I have so many abandoned WIPs staring accusingly at me...

I FEEL THIS. I do think less pressure is the majority part of it, as well as the ability to pick and choose prompts and go with the one that sets the imagination on fire at that exact moment in time. But I also think that when you're staring down a deadline, your brain will take literally any opportunity to try to crawl out of your skull and escape somewhere else. At least mine does ...

Can someone explain to me why I can only write fic for assignments when they are due THAT DAY EXACTLY OMG and not in the month preceding it??? Unfair.

This is very true. I might have done better at uni if I could have written all my assignments about Biggles 😂
